ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming
The National Plan for the Teaching Swimming has been developed by the ASA to provide a template for teaching swimming - it is a comprehensive, integrated, progressive teaching programme that very clearly identifies the standards expected at the various levels. Water confidence, continuous assessment, repetition and effective stroke technique are integral parts of the programme.
We introduced the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) in April 2004.
You may find that your child has been recommended by the swimming teacher to remain at his/her existing level. Please do not be disconcerted by this - it just means that the assessment of your child’s current standard in relation to the standards required through the NPTS has not been fully met. Moving swimmers through courses before they are ready will impair future development.
We are confident that through the ASA’s National Teaching Plan the children will develop much better skills, stroke technique and water confidence.
